Remix Project CD?
Ok, for anyone joining us for the first time, we here at the site have been running an ongoing contest of sorts, whereby interested parties submit their own remixes/mash-ups of Shadow material. Runners-up get a link to their work via Soundcloud, and the best of the bunch receive free stuff from us here at the site. So then we started thinking...should we make an official DJ Shadow Remix CD? In other words, a CD compilation of the best remixes? What do you think?
We're opening it up to you. We'd like to hear your thoughts about how YOU think it should be. Is it worthwhile? A waste of time? We have done a fair amount of thinking on the subject, and have decided the following:
1) It should be free. In other words, we're not going to charge for it...HOWEVER, since we have to pay to have it made, we would probably have to make it free with any physical order (ie, a CD, vinyl, or clothing). We're not trying to lose the farm here.
2) It would be exclusive to the site...not available in any store.
3) YOU should decide the track listing...with a couple of caveats. We would have to limit the CD to anyone from the past (or immediate future) that Shadow has or will select from the Remix Project entries. In other words, you can't get a bunch of friends to vote for something we never chose to highlight. Shadow has volunteered to assemble the tracks in a musically appealing order.
4) YOU should design the cover. That's right...time for you graphic designers to get in on the act! Not since the infamous 'logo contest' of 2001 have we offered a forum for graphic artists, so here's your chance (that is, if we all decide to proceed).
So now it's time to voice your opinion. If this doesn't interest any of you, then we won't do it. But it would be cool to do...right??
Let's get this conversation started!!
PLEASE COMMENT BELOW...

Hello guys, I'm joining here for the first time and I hope everything goes as planned!! Actually, I want to participate in the ongoing competition but I'm not all finished yet so I guess it'll take a few hours for my submission(hope the submission is on). And yeah, I just want to tell you that, I have collaborated many beats together. So, to listen clearly, I suggest you to listen via surround sound systems. Only then you can listen very clearly and totally understand my beats!! Anyways, it probably is an incredible idea to bring up the underground talent..
PLEASE DON'T FORGET "SIX DAYS" incredible song!!!!
I am going to get my buddy who is a SICK graphics guy to submit some art... I am really looking forward to this CD, I just want to bump that Everything But The Girl mix in my car!
Glad to hear you are all still liking the idea, and it is cool you think that Shadow should be choosing the art and music... Any ideas on what direction the art should go? We have not had many submissions yet, so all of you artists: please submit some cover art ideas to generalinfo@djshadow.com
Thanks!
this will be ssiiicckkkk....midnight, 6 days, monosyllabik, mashin', mutual slump, fixed income, stem, napalm, devil's advocate and all would be great starters ;P would def do something for the graphic design element
Hey Mike & the whole Shadow team, in response to your new questions...
1. -How should the mixes be selected?
2. -How should the artwork be selected?
In my opinion I think the music & artwork should be chosen by you.
Like Led Zep's best of.. "Mothership", this was (as far as im aware) compiled by the band. Which as a listener you can appreciate the record far greater knowing that it is what the artist wanted on the record, not just some suit or label thinking about what will sell.
Although this cd would be free with purchase, If you chose the end result then its the music & Art work that you think represents you best. I think it makes it a little more epic.
Good Luck Team
wow!!! it's improbably excellent idea for realisation and remarkable chance for any (and for me 2) to participate on this release!
I think its a fantastic idea! And yes, shadow should decide on the music and art.
Hemetskew is right when saying that Shadow should be the one who finaly select what artwork and tracks will finaly make it on the CD.
The musical contest is already there, so now why not just open a CD sleeve project, running for one month from now.
Only one sleeve proposition per person, bring your best shot...
On Flickr or something else.
I agree: I think the remixes and the artwork should be chosen by Shadow and only Shadow. It will legitimize the CD project as a whole. It is enough that the music itself comes from fans, Shadow should make the final call on the chosen content. And I definitely say GO FOR IT
